Amlan is located in the northern part of the Second Congressional District of Negros Oriental. In 1840, the place was cleared for a community. At that time, guavas called “Alman” were found abundant in the place. From the word “Alman” was derived the name “Amlan” for the settlement.

In 1972, through the efforts of Mayor David R. Trasmonte, the cradle of high school academic civilization among Amlanganons was established. It first occupied a portion of Amlan Elementary School for it had no school site of its own.
Amlan Municipal High School initially opened with its first year and second year for school year 1972-73 with 175 students. It opened with Mr. Jose Galvez as District Supervisor and Mrs. Theresa C. Villanueva as Elementary and Secondary School Principal. The pioneer teachers were: Mr. Romulo Giquinto, Mrs. Celedoña Z. Notarte, Mr. Panfilo Rodriguez and Mrs. Rosario Desiar Torres.
Mr. Galvez was followed by Mr. Melchor Saguban as District Supervisor and Principal. Then came Mr. Francisco Ortega. In 1976, Mrs. Celedoña Z. Notarte was designated acting head teacher. She received her appointment in 1979 as Head Teacher from the Civil Service Commission. She was promoted Principal I in 1981 and served as such for fifteen years. Due to her promotion as Principal II at Dauin, Mr. Julian T. Tornandizo headed the school from 1991 to 2000. With Mr. Tornandizo’s retirement, Mrs. Fidelita S. Sienes became Teacher In Charge from 2000 to 2002. In 2002, Miss Rosela R. Abiera came. She served as Principal I from 2002 to 2010. Due to the promotion of Miss Abiera to Division Supervisor, she was succeeded by Dr. Nonale Q. Resoor in 2010 as Principal I. Dr. Resoor was promoted to Principal II in 2011.
January 7, 2013, due to re-assignments of some school heads, Dr. Resoor was re-assigned to Pamplona West District as District In-Charge while Mr. Pauly A. Fontejon from San Antonio High School was re-assigned as Principal I of ANHS.
May 27, 2013, (Mrs.) Rowena Z. Trofeo, Teacher III of ANHS was designated as Officer In Charge of the school until such time that Mr. Fontejon will recover from his sickness and be back in the service.
June 12, 2013, Mr. Fontejon (who was admitted at Silliman University Medical Center on May 17) was called by the creator at age 41.
Mrs. Trofeo is still the head of school up to the present.
In 1979, Amlan Municipal High School moved to its own school site in the heart of the town facing the Tañon Strait, though some classes were still conducted up the old site. Its land area is 15,000 square meters.
More educators join the institution as years go by. Some may not be from Amlan but they are committed to service and struggle for excellence in all the undertakings in the department of education. The teachers and students work hand in hand in making Amlan Municipal/National High School make a mark in the field of education. The school is not only known in the Division of Negros Oriental but also in the Department of Education, Manila.
The School Head and teachers undergo seminars and trainings every now and then to hone them in their respective fields of concentration, making sure the school is abreast with the new trend in education to keep up with the world’s globalization.
Since March 1975, our school has produced a lot of graduates who are now partners of both public and private officer here and abroad. They are the men and women who were determined to pursue their education whether bachelor’s degree or vocational/technical course.
The school has been a recipient of various instructional materials, teachers’ training packages, computers and equipment from DepEd, NSTIC, DTI, LGU Amlan, Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, and other stake holders.
Assorted reading materials were received from Manila Bulletin for use in the library on June 14, 2013. Ten poor but deserving students have free nutritious noon meals sponsored by Grade 9 students of Junipero Serra High School, Gardena, California of the United States of America until March 2014. The completion of the office comfort room and construction of the library hub CR were made possible through the teletech. community foundation grant.
It is hoped that with the present school set-up, where the school head exercises leadership by example and adheres to the principles of love of God, commitment to service, transparency and good governance, more stakeholders will be able to share their blessings for the different school projects that would really reach and benefit our beloved students.
